The US economy is flashing a worrying signal about the health of the consumer. The gap between growth of GDP and gross domestic income hasn't been this large since 2007, Macquarie said. That's evidenced by a worrying indicator, which hasn't flashed a warning this loud since right before the 2008 recession, according to Macquarie strategists. Yearly growth in gross domestic product is currently outpacing gross domestic income by the most since 2007, Macquarie said in a note. The gap between the two could also explain why Americans feel poorly about the economy despite robust GDP growth, Macquarie added.

The Sydney-based financial conglomerate has not had a steeper first-half profit drop in more than a decade. The results capped a run of "exceptional conditions" last year in the company's commodity trading and asset management segments, buoyed by energy market volatility and ripe conditions for asset sales, respectively, Chief Financial Officer Alex Harvey told Reuters. Macquarie said the asset management division's income should rebound in the second half to about the A$940 million it reported in the same period last year. The company said fees and commissions at investment banking arm Macquarie Capital were in line with the previous comparable period. Profit fell 28% to A$430 million.

Additionally, companies have also announced dozens of "industry-specific LLMs" that link to their core model. However, investors and analysts say that most were yet to find viable business models, were too similar to each other and were now grappling with surging costs. Several other big name entrepreneurs and tech executives are behind new Chinese AI startups, such as Google China's former chief Kai-Fu Lee and Yan Juejie, a former vice-president of SenseTime (0020.HK). Others said that China's largest tech companies Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu ultimately had the biggest headstart and deep pockets to succeed, given their large user bases and wide range of services. For instance, they could easily offer generative AI services as an additional plug-in to their cloud users.

Morgan Stanley has identified three Asia Pacific stocks as "high conviction" and actionable trade ideas. The bank said the three stock ideas highlight "actionable, high-conviction calls" made by its equity research team in the preceding week. However, it cautioned that investors should not interpret these stock ideas as portfolios. Treating 'Three Actionable Ideas' ideas as a portfolio will subject you to the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investments," the bank said. Morgan Stanley said its price target was probability-weighted, giving 30% to its bull case and 60% to its base case scenarios.

Macquarie's Commodities and Global Markets (CGM) unit, its biggest earner, has for several years cashed in on increasing hedging activity amid volatility in oil and gas markets. That had driven the Sydney-based firm's annual earnings to a record A$5.18 billion ($3.53 billion) in fiscal 2023 ended March. While Macquarie did not disclose a profit figure in its quarterly update, Citi Research had expected first-quarter earnings of around A$1 billion ($680.90 million). The analysts noted, however, that Macquarie's earnings may have come in below that. At the end of the quarter, Macquarie's capital surplus stood at A$10.8 billion.

Hong Kong CNN —China has promised to throw its weight behind private businesses, just days after a slew of economic data showed growth momentum had slumped. The measures include promises to break down barriers to market access for private firms, to “fully implement” a system of fair competition and to strengthen enforcement of anti-monopoly laws. “We believe that the … pivot from the top level is real, but it’s not enough to bring back the animal spirit among private companies,” Larry Hu, chief China economist at Macquarie Group, wrote in a research note. That pledge had marked a major shift from leader Xi Jinping’s years-long effort to rein in private businesses, which were perceived as too powerful and disorderly. The Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index closed 0.7% higher, after falling in several previous trading sessions.

The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party sent letters to four separate U.S. venture capital firms, including Qualcomm's venture arm, expressing "serious concern" about their investments in Chinese tech startups. The letters, which were made public on Wednesday, were sent to GGV Capital, GST Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, and Walden International. Qualcomm Ventures, for example, made 13 investments in Chinese A.I. Walden, a smaller firm, was identified as a particularly significant backer of Chinese AI companies. He said at the time he found there was "broad support" among venture capitalists and others to keep U.S. asset managers from investing in Chinese AI firms.

Hong Kong CNN —China has extended some policies to bolster its ailing property market, as the country struggles to reignite economic growth. Larry Hu, chief China economist at Macquarie Group, wrote in a research note that the extension of policies on two types of loans were meant to encourage commercial banks to increase their exposure to the property sector. “[This] move will help restore confidence and bring much-needed liquidity into the property supply chain, with beneficial effects on short-term confidence,” he said. The property market is still in the midst of a historic downturn. To bolster growth, the People’s Bank of China cut its main benchmark lending rates in June for the first time in 10 months.

June 29 (Reuters) - Australian financial conglomerate Macquarie Group (MQG.AX) said on Thursday it would divest its U.S.-based port terminal operator Ceres Terminals, with a source familiar with the matter placing the deal value north of $900 million. The Wall Street Journal in May reported that Macquarie was looking for about $1 billion from the sale, citing sources familiar with the matter. The deal value could be at the lower end of what the Wall Street Journal reported, the source said. However, Ceres Terminals Jacksonville and Intermodal Container Transfer Facility in Jacksonville, managed by Ceres, will not be a part of the deal. They will continue to be owned by MIP III, Macquarie said.

China's yuan is at the lowest since 2022 by traditional metrics as economic growth has disappointed. But one measure of its real effective rate puts the currency at the lowest since 2014. "So valuation-wise, renminbi is starting to look cheap," a Macquarie foreign exchange strategist said. However, expectations of economic stimulus from Beijing could lift the yuan, Trang added. That's due in part to relatively low volatility in currency markets and the yuan's gradual slope downward, she said.
